CUCUMBER CRISP

6 qt. cukes, sliced (not too
thin, unpeeled)
1 qt. onion slices
salt
1 qt. cider vinegar
2 tsp. turmeric
4 lb. sugar (8 c.)
1/4 c. celery seed
1 tsp. ground cloves

Salt cukes in layers, put on ice; let stand 3 hours.
Drain. Bring to a boil the vinegar, turmeric, sugar, celery
seed and cloves. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add cukes and
onions. Heat. Do not boil. Seal in hot jars. Makes 12
pints.
