SPLIT PEA SOUP

2 c. dry split peas
water
2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. whole cumin or more
1/4 tsp. cayenne
1/4 c. soy sauce
2 small onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced

Optional:
sliced carrot
sliced celery
cubed potatoes
cubed ham

Wash split peas. Put in soup pot and add 6 to 10 cups
water. Less water makes a thicker, creamier soup. You can add
more water later. Add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a
boil and simmer on low for 1 1/2 to 5 hours. We like it best
when the split peas dissolve.
