FIVE LAYER MEAL 1 lb. ground beef 1 Tbsp. shortening 1 1/2 tsp. chili powder 1/3 c. uncooked rice 2/3 c. chopped onion 2/3 c. chopped green pepper 2 large potatoes, thinly sliced (1 lb. to 1 1/2 lb.) 1 lb. can tomatoes 1/3 c. catsup 1/3 c. water black pepper Place 1 tablespoon shortening in skillet. Add ground beef and onions. Brown. Stir frequently. When meat is brown, add salt and chili powder and black pepper. Remove from skillet. Cover bottom of frypan with thin potato slices. Sprinkle uncooked rice evenly over potatoes. Spread beef mixture on top of rice. Sprinkle chopped green pepper over beef mixture. Add can of tomatoes. Add water to catsup and pour over mixture (do not stir!). Place lid on pan and turn heat high to bring mixture to cooking temperature. When steam escapes from under the lid, turn heat low and cook 30 minutes. Cut into squares. Each layer can be identified.
