CORNISH PASTIES

3 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 c. shortening
2/3 c. ice water
1 lb. diced or ground raw beef
(lean)
2 c. diced potatoes
2 c. diced carrots
1/2 c. diced onion

Prepare and chill 6 to 8-inch circles of pastry.
Filling: Ground beef and vegetables; arrange in layers on half
of each pastry circle. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Brush
edges of pastry with water and fold into semi-circle. Press
with fork. Cut 1/2-inch slit in top. Place on greased baking
sheet. Bake about 1 hour at 450 degrees for first 10 minutes, 350 degrees to
finish. Melt 2 tablespoons butter with 2 tablespoons water 15
minutes before pasties are done. Pour 2 teaspoons this mixture
through slit in top.
