TEXAS HASH

1/2 onion, chopped
1/2 c. chopped green pepper
2 Tbsp. shortening
1 lb. ground beef
2 c. tomato sauce (or
tomatoes)
1/2 c. uncooked rice
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
1 c. Cheddar cheese
1/8 tsp. pepper

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Saute onions and green pepper. Add ground
beef and fry until done. Add rest of ingredients except cheese. Pour
into a 2-quart covered dish and bake for 45 minutes. Sprinkle cheese
on top last 5 minutes.
