GAIL'S TWISTS

2 pkg. yeast
2 c. buttermilk
1/3 c. sugar (only use 3 Tbsp.
if making cheese twists)
2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening or margarine
1/2 tsp. soda
6 c. flour
2 eggs

Heat buttermilk to very warm, but not boiling. Add
sugar, salt, margarine or shortening. Stir a little and let
sit until lukewarm. Add yeast; let set until dissolved. Add
eggs, soda and 3 cups flour. Mix well; gradually add the 3
remaining cups of flour. Turn out on floured table; roll
dough into large rectangle. Sprinkle half with grated cheese
or cinnamon sugar or jelly or any other filling you like. Fold
other half of dough over on top of filling. Cut dough into
1-inch wide strips; twist twice and put on buttered cookie
sheets. Let rise and then bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes.
