POPPY SEED BRAID

7 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. sugar
1 Tbsp. salt
2 pkg. dry yeast
1 1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. water
1/4 c. margarine
4 eggs
1/4 c. poppy seed (can add to
this amount)
1 Tbsp. water

Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Heat
milk, water and margarine 120 degrees to 130 degrees. Add to dry ingredients
and beat 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Add 3 eggs and
1 cup flour, beat 2 minutes. Stir in enough more flour to form
soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until
smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl and turn to grease
top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double (about 1
hour). Punch down dough. Divide in half. Roll out each 1/2
and divide into three 3 x 12 inch strips. Sprinkle poppy seed
down center of each strip. Pinch edges together into 3 ropes.
Braid ropes together and pinch ends. Place in 5 x 9 x 3-inch
pan. Repeat with other 1/2 of dough. Beat remaining egg and
water and brush on top of loaves, then sprinkle poppy seed over
top of loaves. Let rise until doubled (about 45 minutes).
Bake at 400 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown. Remove
from pan and cool.
