APPLE DUMPLINGS

2 c. sugar
2 c. water
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
2 drops red food coloring
2 Tbsp. butter
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
6 whole apples, pared and
cored

Combine sugar, water, cinnamon and red food coloring in
saucepan and bring to a boil. Add butter to hot syrup. The
syrup will not be thick. Sift together flour, baking powder,
and salt; cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir
until flour is just moistened. Roll 1/4-inch thick and cut 6
squares. Place apple in center of each square. Put sugar,
cinnamon and butter down center of each apple. Moisten edges
of each square and pinch together.
Place dumplings in baking dish and pour syrup over top.
Sprinkle top of dumplings with granulated sugar. Bake at 375 degrees
for 35 minutes.
I use cinnamon candy hearts instead of just food color-
ing.
