DATE BREAD 1 c. chopped dates 1/2 c. chopped nuts 2 Tbsp. orange juice 1 1/2 c. boiling water 2 Tbsp. shortening 1 c. brown sugar 1 egg or 2 yolks 2 1/2 c. sifted flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. soda 1 tsp. vanilla Pour water over dates; let stand 10 minutes. Add soda. Cream shortening, sugar, egg and add to dates. Mix baking powder with flour and sift. Add remainder of ingredients. Mix well. Pour in a paper lined loaf pan and bake in 325 degrees oven for 1 hour. If you let stand for 20 minutes, this helps to prevent cracking on top before placing in oven.
