COFFEE CAKE

3/4 c. white sugar
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. milk

Topping:
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 Tbsp. flour
2 Tbsp. melted butter
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Cream the sugar and butter; add the eggs and beat well.
Combine the dry ingredients, add to the creamed mixture and
alternate with the milk, set aside. Melt the butter in sauce-
pan; add remaining ingredients and put into 9 x 9-inch well
greased pan. Use half the first mixture, then half the top-
ping, remaining first mixture and top with the last half of the
topping. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.
