2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
1 c. raisins
1 c. dates, cut up
1 c. mixed fruit (candied
fruit cake mix)
1 tsp. each salt, cinnamon,
cloves and allspice
1 c. chopped walnuts
3 1/2 c. water

Measure all ingredients in good sized saucepan. Boil
for 20 minutes and allow to cool. Meanwhile, add 2 teaspoons
baking soda to 1/2 cup warm water. Allow to set for a few
minutes and "work". Add to cooled cooked mixture, add 1 small
glass liquor or wine and stir in 4 1/2 cups flour. Mix well.
Grease and flour 3 bread pans. Bake in preheated 350 degrees oven for
1 1/2 hours. Very moist. Makes a good fruit cake for the
