ITALIAN CHOCOLATE COOKIES
(Pepper Balls)
4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. black pepper
1 c. cocoa
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. shortening
1 pt. warm milk

Mix and work in thoroughly in order given: flour,
nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, cocoa, baking powder,
baking soda, shortening and warm milk. Roll out on bread board
and cut in long strips. Cut and shape into balls and bake on
cookie sheet at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes. You may add nuts,
raisins or whiskey to batter (optional). Frost.
