GRANDMA'S SPICE CAKE

2 c. white sugar
1 c. shortening
4 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. milk
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved
in a little hot water
1 Tbsp. cream of tartar
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cloves
4 egg whites, beaten

Cream together sugar and shortening. Add egg yolks,
vanilla, milk, baking soda, cinnamon, cream of tartar, cloves
and flour; beat well, 4 to 5 minutes. Gently fold in egg
whites. Pour into three potato torte pans and bake at 350 degrees for
1 hour or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool and unmold.
Frost with vanilla frosting and drizzle melted chocolate over
top. Very moist and freezes well.
