BETTER-THAN-BROWNIES

1 sq. unsweetened chocolate
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. flour, sifted
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts

Melt chocolate and shortening together. Cool slightly,
beat in sugar, then eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each
addition. Stir together flour and baking powder and salt; add
to chocolate mixture. Stir in chopped nuts and pour into a
greased 11 3/4 x 7 1/2-inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 min-
utes.
I usually double the recipe (because it's so good!) and
bake it in a jelly roll pan. Very good with chocolate icing.
