GRANDMA'S LYE SOAP 4 cans Lewis lye 8 gal. water (rain water or melted snow) 1 lb. Borax 16 lb. meat drippings (rendered from pork) Place all in large cast kettle and boil for 1 hour. Turn into shallow crocks. Cool, and the next day, cut into bars. After cooking up some of these recipes and use this lye soap in your dishwater, throw it out the back door and if the chickens eat it and get the scours, you've put too much lye in your soap.
