1 c. shortening 2 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 2 eggs 2 1/4 c. unsifted all-purpose flour 1 c. buttermilk 1/2 c. cocoa 2 tsp. soda 1 c. hot water In large mixing bowl cream shortening, sugar, salt and vanilla. Add eggs and beat with mixer until mixture is very light and creamy. Add flour and buttermilk and beat 2 more minutes. In small mixing bowl mix cocoa, soda, add hot water. Add to rest of batter. Pour into three 8-inch round pans or one 9 x 12 x 2 loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. Frost with Glossy Chocolate Frosting. Glossy Chocolate Frosting: 2 c. sugar 6 Tbsp. cornstarch 2 c. water 1/4 to 1/2 c. cocoa or 4 sq. semi-sweet chocolate 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine 1 tsp. vanilla Mix sugar and cornstarch in 2-quart saucepan. Add water and chocolate. Cook over medium flame until thickened. Note: Keep close watch and stir almost constantly to insure smoothness. Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla.
