1/2 c. salted butter - no substitute 1 Tbsp. shortening 1 Tbsp. milk 16 oz. box powdered sugar, sifted 1 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract (or any flavor) Cream butter, shortening, and milk until light and fluffy. Gradually add sifted sugar, beating each addition in fully. Stir in extract. Continue until all sugar is mixed well and you can no longer feel any grains of sugar when you test a tiny bit with your tongue. Roll out onto aluminum foil in 3/4" diameter ropes. Slice each rope into 1/4" slices. Cover lightly and store overnight to set. You can divide mixture in half and tint with food color. (Easier when made in a food processor.)
