OLD FASHIONED TEA CAKES

5 c. plain flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. buttermilk

Sift flour into large mixing bowl. With fist, make a deep well in
center of flour. Add shortening, sugar, egg, salt, soda, vanilla and
buttermilk in order given; mix well with hand. Work in enough flour
to make a soft dough. Chill dough. Roll dough on floured board to
about 1/8-inch thick and cut. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake
15 minutes in a preheated 375 degrees oven.
