1 oz. red food coloring 1 oz. water 3 Tbsp. cocoa 1/2 c. Crisco 1 1/2 c. sugar 2 eggs 2 c. flour 1 c. buttermilk 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. vinegar 1 tsp. baking soda Frosting: 5 Tbsp. flour 1 c. milk 1 c. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. shortening Mix first three ingredients in separate bowl and let stand. Cream sugar, Crisco, and eggs. Add remaining ingredients and mix. Add the cocoa mixture, mix well, then mix in by hand, the baking soda and vinegar. Place in 13x9 cake pan. Bake 350 degrees 30-40 min. To make frosting you must mix the milk and flour together and heat on stove, stirring constantly until thick. DO NOT LET BOIL. When thick paste remove and place in refrigerator to cool. Cream together the sugar, shortening, and vanilla. Once paste is completely cool add to the creamed ingredients and mix with a mixer until smooth and creamy. Place on cooled cake and serve.
