2 c. brown sugar 1 c. shortening 3 eggs, well beaten 4 c. flour 1 tsp. soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Date Filling: 2 (8 oz.) pkg. dates, already diced 1/2 c. nuts (walnuts; optional) 1 c. water 3/4 c. granulated sugar Mix together brown sugar, shortening, eggs, flour, soda, salt and cinnamon. Divide into 4 parts and roll each 1/2-inch thick. Mix date filling in saucepan. Cook until thick and let cool. Spread date filling on dough. Roll and refrigerate in foil overnight. Cut 1/4-inch thick and bake on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 12 minutes.
