DATE-NUT PUDDING

1 c. chopped pitted dates
1 c. boiling water
1 c. granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. shortening
1 1/4 c. unsifted flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 c. walnuts
1 1/4 tsp. soda
1 egg

Brown Sugar Sauce:
2 c. light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. boiling water
2 tsp. vanilla
4 Tbsp. flour
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
4 Tbsp. butter

Mix dates, boiling water and soda. Set aside. Cream sugar,
shortening and egg. Combine flour and baking powder in sifter.
Sift over creamed mixture. Blend. Add date mixture, then the
nuts. Pour into greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees
for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool and cut into 9 servings. Top each with
Brown Sugar Sauce and whipped cream, if desired.

Brown Sugar Sauce: Mix sugar, flour, salt and cinnamon.
Combine with water in saucepan and cook until thick. Add butter
and vanilla. Cool.
