1 c. butter 1 Tbsp. shortening 2 3/4 c. sugar 5 eggs 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 Tbsp. warm water 1 1/4 c. buttermilk 3 c. flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract Combine butter and shortening. Mix well. Gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Dissolve baking soda in warm water and stir in buttermilk. Combine flour and salt, stirring well. Add to creamed mixture alternately, beginning with buttermilk and ending with the flour mixture. Mix well after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. Cool in pan 10 to 15 minutes.
