1 lb. dates 1 tsp. soda, dissolved in 1 c. boiling water 1 c. sugar 1 egg 1 Tbsp. Crisco 1 c. chopped walnuts 1 1/3 c. flour 1 tsp. vanilla Pour hot water and soda over chopped dates. Let cool. Mix together rest of ingredients with a fork. Bake in a tube pan for 40 minutes in a 325 degrees oven or until fork comes out clean (Bundt cake pan). Glaze: 1/2 c. chopped dates 1/2 c. walnuts or pecans 2/3 c. water 1 c. brown sugar dash of vanilla Cook in saucepan until thickened and pour over warm cake.
