4 c. milk 6 eggs, separated 1/2 c. granulated sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Place the milk in a double boiler over rapidly boiling water and heat to just below the scalding point. Place the egg yolks in a bowl along with the sugar and mix the two thoroughly. Add the hot milk a little at a time, beating slowly after each addition. Beat the egg whites until they just begin to stand in peaks. Add the vanilla and beat for 1 second longer. Fold the egg whites into the yolk mixture. Pour the custard into a lightly buttered 2-quart casserole. Place the casserole dish in a pan of water and bake at 325 degrees for 1/2 hour or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.
