2 c. raisins 1 c. water 1/3 c. shortening 1 c. brown sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 or 1 tsp. nutmeg (as desired) 1/2 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1/3 c. hot water 2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/3 c. chopped nuts (optional) Boil first 7 ingredients for 3 minutes. Cool. Add dissolved soda. Sift flour and baking powder. Add to mixture. Add nuts if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in a greased and floured 9x13-inch loaf pan.
