1/2 pkg. chopped dates
1 tsp. soda
1 c. boiling water
1 1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1 scant c. sugar

1/2 pkg. chopped dates
3/4 c. sugar
2/3 c. water

CAKE: Mix dates, soda and boiling water in bowl. Sift flour,
salt and baking powder. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Add flour
mixture and date mixture alternately to creamed butter mixture.
Stir in nuts. Put in 8 x 8 inch pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 40
minutes. (Double recipe 45-50 minutes in 9 x 13 inch pan.)

TOPPING: Bring to boil. Simmer. Pour over cake just out of
oven 5-10 minutes.
