1/4 c. + 2 Tbsp. shortening
2 Tbsp. butter - softened
1/4 c. brown sugar - packed
1 c. molasses
3 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 c. sugar

Cream shortening and butter, gradually add brown sugar,
beating until light and fluffy. Add molasses, beating well.
Combine dry ingredients, add to mixture to make stiff dough.
Chill several hours or overnight. Shape dough into 1 1/2 x 1/2
-inch cookies, roll in sugar. Place cookies on greased baking
sheet. (Cookies will be crispy.) Bake at 300 degrees for 13 - 15
minutes. Recipe makes approx: 5 dozen cookies.

NOTE: For softer cookies, store in airtight containers.
