1 (18. 5 oz.) German chocolate cake mix 3 large eggs 1 1/4 c. buttermilk 1/4 c. vegetable oil 1 tsp. vanilla Beat first 4 ingredients with mixer until well mixed; add vanilla. Pour into two 9-inch round cake pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes or until a wooden toothpick has been inserted and comes out clean. Remove from oven and let stand in pan 10 minutes, then move to cooling rack. Frost with German Chocolate Frosting, as follows. German Chocolate Frosting: 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 1 (3 1/2 oz.) can flaked coconut (or 1 1/2 c.) 1 Tbsp. vanilla 3 egg yolks 1/2 c. butter 1 c. chopped pecans In heavy saucepan, combine milk, egg yolks and butter, over medium heat. Cook until thickened, about 10 minutes. Stir in coconut, pecans and vanilla. Allow to cool before frosting. Should frost a 2-layer cake. I double for a 3-layer cake.
