BUTTERMILK POUND CAKE

1 c. shortening or butter (do
not use oleo)
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. lemon or almond extract
5 eggs
1/4 tsp. baking soda
3 c. sifted flour
1 c. buttermilk

Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla
and lemon or almond extract. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing
well. Dissolve soda in 1 tablespoon hot water. Add flour and
buttermilk alternately to sugar mixture, beginning and ending
with flour. Add soda mixture. Mix until blended. Pour into
greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour
or until done (test with toothpick).
