GREEK SPONGE CAKE

12 eggs, separated
2 c. sugar
3 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla

Beat the egg yolks with sugar for 15 to 20 minutes.
Gradually add sifted flour, baking powder and vanilla. Mix
well. Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold the egg yolk mixture
into the egg whites. Pour into greased baking pan (11 x
16-inches). Bake in 350 degrees oven for 40 minutes. Cool. Pour
warm syrup over cake and let stand until absorbed. Cut in
diamond shapes.

Syrup:
3 c. sugar
2 c. water
juice of 1/2 lemon
juice and grated rind of 2
oranges
Cook all together until a thin syrup is formed.
